Newfound, Re-covered
Volume no. 2 – Winter
To kick off volume two of Newfound, we’re showcasing new cover art by Joseph David Doherty. His painting, “Fitter to Invent Than to Judge,” is the winner of our Volume Two Cover Art competition. Doherty’s haunting image explores the complexity of transition and memory and sets our tone for this issue.
Within these pages, you’ll find a wide variety of prose, poetry, and visual media; and while each selection is stylistically unique, we’re excited that the variety of genres represented in this issue promotes our mission to support writers and artists pushing the boundaries of what constitutes “nature.” From Shya Scanlon’s timely novel “Uno Che” (excerpted here) about land and politics on the U.S./Mexico border and Julianne Lutz Warren’s interactive nonfiction treatise on hope and nature in a post-natural world in “Remembering Nature as Hope” to poet Chris Glomski’s evocative articulation of human space in “Realism” and environmental artist Betty Beaumont’s exploration of “culture” concealed in the natural world in “Camouflaged Cells,” the writers and artists in this issue occupy themselves with the blurring of “natural” and “unnatural.” This metonymic trope appears again in Cameron Turner’s conversation with The Stranger’s Visual Arts Editor, Jen Graves, as she discusses the origins and complications of 20th century American land art. Finally, our reviews in this issue investigate intersections between physical and psychological displacement, travel, and home.
Newfound began in 2009 when Daniel, Eric, and I brought together our common interests in place, art, and digital media. We had no idea how much our vision would develop and how many people would come together to help Newfound grow into the journal it is today. Thanks to everyone who has supported us through this process, with special thanks to Fiction Editor Josh Collins, Interviewer Cameron Turner, Poetry Editor Caitlin McCrory, and Poetry Editorial Assistants Katie Ellison and Andi Boyd for your hard work and dedication as staff members. May our second year be as creative as our first!
